Finding Your Story
Mon. - Fri. June 28 - July 2, 2010
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Ages 7 - 11
Instructor: Alexis David

Books are paths into other worlds: places where dogs talk, monsters live in closets, and people can breathe underwater. Some kids love accessing these lands, while others think reading is as fun as getting a dental check-up. This workshop is for both groups. It is based around the idea that kids read when they have found books they love, write their own stories, and see reading, not as a chore, but as a treat. This summer Higher Ground Learning invites both “readers” and “non-readers” to spend a week in their imagination and find their story.
* Although the workshop’s main emphasis will be increasing kids’ reading ability and enjoyment, there will some phonic, and grammar instruction.

We are hoping that your kids will see the body in a whole new way and make lots of wonderful dinner conversation with you.

Math Olympics
Mon. - Fri. July 19 - 23, 2010
1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Ages 7 - 11
Instructor: Matt Steele, Melissa Crespo, James Hardy

We’re throwing away the chalkboard and teaching kids to think about numbers in a totally different way. Addition, subtraction, division and multiplication facts are crucial skills to master and many kids have a hard time learning them. While these concepts are often taught through worksheets, we think doing worksheets is as much fun for kids as filling out tax forms is for adults. Research has shown that a better way is to first show the relationship between numbers and then use practice and repetition, not through photocopies, but through active games. This summer Higher Ground Learning will be hosting the first annual Math Olympics. In this five-day workshop geared toward elementary students, kids will start the day “training,” i.e. learning a math concept. Then, they’ll spend the second half of the day using this knowledge to compete for the gold in our Math Olympics events!

Operation Write Out Loud
Mon. - Fri. July 26 - 30, 2010
3:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Ages 12 - 18
Instructor: Adam Love
Join us for a workshop devoted entirely to creative writing. This course will be taught by three local Slam Poets, including two members of Utah’s International Slam Poetry team. This course will be suitable for all levels of young writers—every person’s writing ability will be accounted for.  You will learn about the history of Slam Poetry and its essential roots to Hip-Hop music and culture, as well as what makes “Slam” poetry different than “written” poetry, found in text books. We will study Slammers/rappers like Saul Williams and Talib Kweli to learn how Slam poetry inherently speaks through a combination of rhythm, vocal, and theatric techniques; poets usually “act out” their poems and recite them in a musical manner, very similar to “freestyle” rap.  Come take a week long course to learn how to spit flows as fly as Lil’ Wayne’s, and with the intensity and intelligence of Socrates, Mos Def, and Noam Chomsky.
